Today I got the call that I knew had to come. I have been dreading her having any problems related to her "fowl" duties.
But sure enough, while I was perusing Kroger's grocery store, looking for stuff for dinner, my cell phone rang. A
It seems that Bart had somehow gotten injured, and his entire chest was covered in blood. And if you know anything about chickens, you know that the rest of them will 'happily' peck him to death, if he is bleeding.
We went over all the different scenarios that might work. Unfortunately, the coop is one room, and there is no place to separate a wounded chicken. That's going to change this year, I promise you.
Finally, she suggested that she call our Wildlife Control guy, who lives nearby. He has successfully rehomed a few skunks for me.
Then it hit me........my vet has taken care of some strange animals, even an iguana. Why not a rooster???
Lois just called me, in her car, on the way to the vet, with Bart in a crate in the back.
Probably crowing all the way.

Wouldn't you know it...just when you are away. That's the way things happen usually. Hope he's ok, that Lois is now meditating somewhere and that you have a good trip home. Deb

HI. There is a Boston area blogger at hencam.com and her blog has an amazing amount to advice for chicken keeping. I highly recommend you check it out as she has great advice.
A dog crate is an excellent way to separate a chicken when necessary. I also have a two-story rabbit hutch in the middle of my coop that is a good little condo for any that need isolation. It allows them to remain in the midst of the flock and yet get the rest they need. I hope Bart is okay.

If it's been cold in your area, it could be frost bite on the comb or waddles. Bart has a goodly supply of both. Those little points are definitely prone to frost bite. Bart, being black, is less likely to get pecked. Blood doesn't show up as well on black as it does other colors. And, being in the area of the head, every little thing bleeds like crazy.

I sew leather and canvas bags (BowlsandBags.com) and need to buy a good machine. So, if you have one, can you let me know what you think of it? I can't find many reviews about it.
