Sunshine and a strange giveaway.

We did not get a "blizzard", not by any standards.  Just an old fashion snow storm, and about 10" of snow.
So I had no trouble getting to the studio this morning, and TA DA, my headache is better.....storm has passed, skies are clear.
I am getting the picture.
IMPENDING Storm=low pressure system= screaming headache.

NOW, if that were you, and throughout the spring and summer, you found that your head was on the mend, and then winter came around again, and you went through the same old scenario, WHAT would YOU do????

The outside cats were loving the blue skies, and beautiful sunshine, kind of like me.

Roy and I took a nice walk, he loves the sun, too.
Down the street, someone else was trying to get some sunshine.

Just not too MUCH sun.

I had a nice morning at the studio, listened to some old CDs, wove on a rug.
Did some cat watching.

And some bird watching.
(We need to wash some windows around here !!!)

Thank goodness all the "old crows" were feasting next door.

Then I had company.   I thought they were customers, this very nice couple who stopped by.  But no.
They came to see if I would take some stuff off their hands.  Seems the lady's mother passed away and left her with some rug hooking paraphernalia.
And since weaving and hooking seem (to some) to be connected, somehow.......they decided to try me.
Now I just told you about my extensive rug hooking "past life".
I guess they weren't that far off the mark, were they?

So here is what they brought.

I think this lap frame was hand made, but it is so cool.

There is a rug in progress on it, the pattern is Pearl McGown.

The previous rug hooker did an incredible job.  The hooking is shaded, and fine.  I would say it is a a #4 or less.
 There is storage room underneath.

The top tips forward and back, and I imagine you can tighten it so it stays where you want it.

There is a fine hook, and some wool from Dorr Mill.

There are two small suitcases full of wool, pieces, and already cut.
There is a three ring binder full of Rug Hooker Magazines.  Old ones.

And all these pieces of brown paper, they have specific colors of cut wool in them.
Ready to hook.

 Like this.

When I first saw the stuff, a little voice in my head said, "You can sell this stuff on Ebay."
Another little voice (yes, there is more than one) said: " You CAN'T be serious."

Because I don't hook anymore.  There isn't enough time in the day.
And I weave.
And when I don't weave, I knit.  For FUN.
So there is NO TIME for rug hooking.
Which brings me to the giveaway.
A spontaneous, my headache is better today, glad to be alive, grateful for all of it, ready to move on.............GIVEAWAY.
So please, if you are a rug hooker, and you will USE this stuff, tell me about it in the comments.
I will draw a name, and all you will have to pay is shipping from 12839 to you.
Drawing on Thursday Feb 14th, Valentine's day!

And I will say,  "Happy Hooking". That's another HH, but one that's definitely more fun.

God how I love the blog world. Not that long ago, someone left with their mother's treasured, but useful-to-only-a-rare-few hobby materials would be stuck and those things would end up gathering dust in an attic somewhere. Now, with one post on your blog, they will find the perfect home. How great is that?

I'm enjoying the sunshine too!

Oh that's lovely. I'll bet they follow your blog and read recently that you were a hooker in your previous life. ;)

I wouldn't use it.. I know better than that. But I do hope that someone who would wins it.

I only wished you could send this to the Netherands. I would love to finish it. But I don't know how I could pay the costs for sending unless you could be payed by creditcard. Here you don't see rughooking tools at all. The first time I have seen this done was when I visited Canada a few years ago, there was a lady on a market that made a beautyfull rugg like this.
Hope someone will get a lot of fun with it.

What a generous giveaway. I have been wanting to start hooking (am surrounded by rug hookers)but have not had the cash to start. This would be wonderful and I promise that I would use them. I would even drive to pick them up (I live in northern New York).

I was taught rughooking by an 80 year old woman who was really gifted with the passion for hooking. Pearl McGowan patterns were many of her rug foundations.
I was fortunate to receive a few that were started but completing them would require thin cuttings of muted multidyed wools. Much of what you displayed both in wool and pattern seems just the ticket and I would love to honor her memory by completing a rug. Please enter me in the giveaway on Valetine Day! Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness.

YAY your headache is better! Seems that you need to get a place with high pressure most of the time...I think that means near the ocean, don't you? And then I can come visit. :) Wish I hooked but I don't. Lovely work, however! Sun out here too and it feels wonderful!

so glad your headache is "gone" and the sunshine is there! I have a dear friend that is giving a rug hooking class at our Fiber Festival in April that would LOVE the rug hooking stash. She is disabled and trying to make ends meet with her crafting. you are so generous to all of us Hilary, we love you for it.

This is very dear and I would love to give this to my Mother! Mom lost her husband(Dad) of 53 yrs.and our family home in CT last year. Now she lives in a senior center near us in VT. She used to rug hook a few years back(I have one of hers) and I think she would love to have this and work on finishing it. Thank you for making this kind offer.

I'm not a rug hooker but am hoping that someone gets to scoop up this little treasure. And as for your question as to what I would do if winter was coming . . . I think I'll answer that with this:

I'm sorry the weather keeps causing you grief. I had years of weather related migraines and can't imagine the misery. Hopefully with time the weather component of your headaches will fade. For almost 30 years I had barometer knees. Nowhere near as bad since they were replaced, but I'm guessing a bionic head isn't feasible yet. I follow your blog from time to time, and love the photos of your views of life. Please- hang in there and know folks are thinking of you. Please enter me in your drawing. Thank you very much.

Oh my, what a delicious frame, project and collection of wool. I have been hooking projects since I was a child. I fine good wools at second hand stores and love the bag for $5 days when I can get some great pieces to cut into strips for my projects. It would be a delight to have a real frame...I have always used old picture frames or wooden embroidery hoops for my projects, large and small. If you will put my name in the giveaway hat I will happily await the announcement of the winner.
