Back to school.

And the winner is........................my mother is shuffling up the papers........
From Crazy as a Loom

BSPINNER!!!!!!

The mug mats of your choice will be on the way, as soon as I get your address.

I spent all day at the new Adirondack Folk School, in Lake Luzerne, NY.
From Crazy as a Loom

At the site of the old town hall, renovations are under way. Classes start in June, and the course list is impressive.
You can check it out here.
From Crazy as a Loom

They are teaching lots of wood working courses, like making rustic furniture.
From Crazy as a Loom

I am going to be teaching a workshop there every Wednesday in June, and if it fits into my schedule, I will be doing more teaching in the coming year.
So far there are 5 looms.
From Crazy as a Loom

And they all had to be warped.
From Crazy as a Loom

Funny how life offers up twists and turns you didn't expect. I had no intention whatever of going anywhere else to teach weaving. Then I had this student, her husband was starting this school, one thing led to another, and here I am.
The school is located right on the Hudson River, and it is beautiful.
There will be painting by the river, gardening, kids crafts, places to picnic, and a path to hike along the water.
From Crazy as a Loom

It is truly a remarkable place, and the community has come together to get it up and running.
If you have time, check it out. Better yet, come take a course.
You'll love the Adirondacks!
But right now, it is off to the hot tub, and then I hear this plaintive voice calling me.....I think it is my bed!
No fooling.
(and thanks Connie, for your help)

Anyone for an orange??

Well, I would love to say that the porch is done, but it isn't quite. The floor needs to be resanded, and stained one more time. But after all the work that went into this, that is no big deal.

And I did promise to post pictures today, if the sun was shining, and it was.
From Crazy as a Loom

I am in love with this porch. It is the porch I have dreamed of having my whole life.

From Crazy as a Loom

There was a lot of questions/discussion/anguishing over the roof line, how to bring the two roofs together in a way that didn't look like a patch job.
I think this works well.
From Crazy as a Loom

A porch is a place you go to sit and rock, to have a cuppa tea, or a cuppa coffee. Or maybe a nice glass of iced tea when the temperature goes up.
From Crazy as a Loom

It is also going to be a place to eat lunch.
From Crazy as a Loom

There are outlets so I can plug my sewing machine in. What better place to sew blue jean strips??
From Crazy as a Loom

I decided to have a second set of stairs on the other end of the porch. I'm glad I did.

From Crazy as a Loom

Tammy came this morning.....and we wove a 5x6 rug for an order. She hasn't been to the studio in a while, and I miss her help. We made quick work of it. I had the loom warped and ready, the fabric all cut.
But before I left today, I made sure to take these pictures.
From Crazy as a Loom

OOPS.....think someone forgot to paint the soffit on the top.
From Crazy as a Loom

And in case you were wondering what happened to the OLD PORCH, well here it is.
Hey, it's the ultimate recycling.
From Crazy as a Loom

Oh, and didn't I offer you an orange?????
From Crazy as a Loom

Told you I can't resist those loom shots.

Happiness is...

FIVE THINGS.
From Crazy as a Loom

Sounds strange, doesn't it?
But maybe you remember, about 13 years ago, Oprah had a program about it. I don't remember who the guest was, but the gist of the program was that you wrote 5 things in a notebook every day, 5 things you were grateful for.
At the time, I had just returned from a family trip to England. We had been there for three weeks, my mother returning to her homeland, with me and my three daughters. My then husband, since deceased, so I can talk about him, was drunk the whole time I was gone. It was evident when we walked through the door.
It wasn't the first time, and I knew it wouldn't be the last.
It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but I said I was done with it.
And I started, on the day he left, to write in my little notebook.
5 things.
At first, it was hard to find 5 things. I was hurt, and disappointed, and even a little afraid of the future. And even though it was ultimately for the better, and I was pretty confident of that, change is always hard.
I was always grateful for my family, my children, my mother, my father.
Then I was thankful for my little house, and my yard, and my flowers. I was thankful for my dogs, and my cats, and thankful for the worn and loved books on my shelf. I was grateful for my stash of fabric, and yarn.
Then it was a cup of hot tea, or a Fresca (my favorite drink at the time, not any more)
And the days began to pile up, and the pages filled up in my little notebook.
There were rhubarb pies, and mac and cheese, chocolate chip cookies, quiet evenings, my favorite TV show. Hooked rugs I finished, flowers that filled the front yard with fragrance.
Day after day, the list grew. Things I was grateful for, things that nurtured me, held me together, made me happy. And lots of days, repeats appeared.
My kids,my mother, a job, food on the table, being together, being loved. Peace. Quiet. The absence of drama. Hope for the days to come.
I think 5 things to be grateful for grounded me, in a world that was shifting, it made me focus on the simplest, and ultimately, the best.
Many, many times I repeated to myself, 'gratitude is the attitude'. And one day at a time, I made my list.
Not long ago, I was rummaging through a drawer, and there it was, the little notebook. As I flipped through the pages of a year of being grateful, I was reminded of how little effort it really takes to change direction. A simple quarter turn of your footprint on the ground. That's all.

I didn't plan on writing about this, not at all. But as I opened the 'new post' page, my fingers started typing it out.
I just came along for the ride.
And in case y'all are getting sick of loom shots.
Well, I apologize.
But I'm not gonna stop any time soon.
Thanks for visiting.......I do love all your comments.

Mug mats for free.

GIVEAWAY!

From Crazy as a Loom

I have just started putting these mug mats on my web site. I usually only sell these out of the shop, but since my business seems to be mostly an online business, I figure I better get them on the web site, if I want to sell them at all.

So, just for the heck of it, I am going to give a set of 4 mug mats to one of my readers. The only requirement is that you leave a comment. I will put the names in a basket, and draw a name out on Sunday.
And you get to pick a color!!!! How can ya' hate it????
It is cold here in NY, and I cleaned my fabric mess at the studio. It started with me searching for fabric for a custom rug, and realizing that I couldn't open the door to the pantry, where much of my stash is located. So, once I reached in like an octopus, and pulled enough stuff out the door, so I could open it, I got kind of crazy.
I dragged everything that was on the floor, out. Then I started going through it, organizing it in plastic totes, and finding homes for them. It felt very good to get it done.
I did have time to weave some placemats. I am loving this color.
From Crazy as a Loom

Can you believe there are orange threads in there??? Who would have thought???
From Crazy as a Loom

I also took some time to walk around the yard, to see what I had in store for me......and the answer is, lots of work. Makes me tired just thinking about it.
I bought a snowball bush a couple of years ago, because my mother used to have a gigantic one, that I always loved. This one seems to be thriving.
From Crazy as a Loom

Isn't is pretty?
From Crazy as a Loom

So that's it for now.
The porch is done, the first sunny day means photos, and I will show you the wonderful results.
Don't forget to get in on the giveaway.

Don't go

I know....you probably think I've been laying around lately, doing nothing. Resting on my laurels.
From Crazy as a Loom

Well, just because I haven't been blogging, does not mean I have been lallygagging around.
(don't ya' love that word??)
From Crazy as a Loom

I have actually been a little quiet, because I have been thinking. Pensive. See my pensive look.
From Crazy as a Loom

Didn't think I could do it, did you??
Well, I can.
I can also be quite playful, in spite of my age.
Check it out.
From Crazy as a Loom

But seriously, I have been thinking about........come closer..............so I can whisper.............................why I blog.
From Crazy as a Loom

Why do I do it? What motivates me? Do people really read it, or do I fool myself? Is it all just so much blather. I have been thinking about it all day.
All of this, I must admit, brought to mind when I heard that one of my favorite bloggers was calling it quits. I feel like I am losing a friend. I want to scream....NO, don't GO. But of course, I can't do that. And I wouldn't want to interfere with someone giving up their blog, if that was really what they wanted to do. But this blogger has a voice, a very special voice, and it reverberated to me, every time. I find myself missing the place where it was. Does that make sense?
Blogging, for me, has turned out to be a way that I connect with a part of myself that is usually quiet. And it is a good thing. It feels good to write myself up on these pages. And if someone out there likes what I am doing, all the better. Good energy, all the way.
And just in case my blogger friend, who is no more, should happen to sneak online and read this entry, this is what I have to say to you.
With nothing but good thoughts, of course.
From Crazy as a Loom
Unless, of course, you want to change your mind. Then I could be persuaded to post more playful pics. If you like.
And I won't stick my tongue out at you anymore.

Keep moving.

I feel like a big girl. I do.
Not only do I have a REAL credit card machine hooked up to my computer, instead of the "knuckle buster" I have been using for years, but I am now operational with Quick Books.
And no, I didn't figure it out by myself. Not by a long shot.
Thank goodness for Tina, from CBH Business Services, in Glens Falls, SHE made it happen. Now I just have to do it, and I am committed.
Anything to make life simpler. That's my motto.
So this morning, while I was waiting for her to arrive, I started weaving this wild rug of stripes.
It is 8 ft long.
Why??? Why, you might ask, did you weave it EIGHT FEET LONG? For crying out loud.
Well, (I answer) I wove it 8 ft long, because I WANTED to, and because I COULD.
Ain't it purty????

From Crazy as a Loom
And after I swore to you all, that I would not ever tell prison stories, I went to sleep last night, and my dream of prison was so real, I woke in a sweat.
Lord have mercy.
I guess, looking back, it was one of the things I hated most about being there. Walking down corridors, when whole companies of inmates were coming straight at me. Thirty some sets of eyes, all staring, or pretending not to. Murmurs, whispers, wisecracks occasionally loud enough to pick out. The feeling that you were walking through danger and bad attitudes.
Me in my scrubs a size too big, and a lab coat to my knees. Them in green, all green. And one officer, in blue. Never has the sight of blue looked so good.
I didn't mind so much walking through the cell blocks. I walked fast. So everyone told me. They said that they had never seen a woman walk so fast. And if I was really, really quiet, sometimes I had passed by each cell before the occupant knew I was even out there. Once in a while, someone would holler out, "You're sposed to announce yourself".......yes, there was that rule. All females were supposed to 'announce' their presence on the gallery.
Are you out of your ********** mind?????? Announce myself?
I think not.
Be quiet, go fast. Don't look anywhere but at your feet. At the same time, have eyes in the back of your head, so no one sneaks up on you.
But meeting them in the hallways, when they were coming back from the yard, or chow, those were the times I felt most vulnerable. And worse even, was meeting them where there was little room to walk between them and the cells on the other side.
I didn't much feel like a big girl, at all.
Some things I hope to forget, but that feeling of being naked in a way that defies description, I will never forget that, no matter how long I live.

Taking a break

Some weeks I have ZERO commitments, and can weave away to my heart's content. Then other weeks, life intervenes. This has been one of those weeks.
I did manage to finish a couple of rugs.
One of them is the hit and miss rug I had on the loom a couple of days ago. It is a happy rug, I'm glad you like it.
From Crazy as a Loom

Yes, I sew all those strips together. I cut the fabric with an electric cutter, and mix them all up in a plastic tote. I put the tote on the floor next to the sewing machine, and sew them together in a totally haphazard manner.
Cause sometimes, that is how I feel.
Then other times, I feel more ........organized.
Then I make rugs that I would call 'cottage-y', if I wasn't up to my eyeballs with that word. It makes me shiver.
From Crazy as a Loom

But you see what I mean? I like the rug, just need to call it something a little more original.

And thanks, Sharon, for the book suggestion, The Help. I read it like I was devouring a bag of chips. And it was fantastic.
The porch may actually be done this week, and I can't wait to take photos of it. It has taken about twice as long as planned, but I know it is going to be totally worth the wait.
I can see myself now, rocking on the porch with a glass of wine iced tea, the breeze playing a sweet tune on the wind chimes. Ah, heaven.
Or taking a lunch break, with a huge salad, a glass of wine iced tea, and fresh country air.
Sure beats all those lunch breaks I took during the 20 years I worked in a prison.

Someone told me once I should write a book about that time of my life, and that experience.
And it's true, I could come up with a whole lot of stories about working there. Heaven knows. Would curl your hair, shock you to your shoes, make you laugh, maybe cry.
But that would mean that I would have to RELIVE it, and honestly folks, I think I would rather
have a lobotomy.
And on that note, I shall retire.
Cheers.

So simple.

It started here........

From Crazy as a Loom

And spent some time here........
From Crazy as a Loom

Finally turning up here.......
From Crazy as a Loom

OH YEAH, THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
From Crazy as a Loom

No matter what kind of weaving I do, this is what moves me. Color, folks. Color.
It doesn't have to be complicated tie ups, or treadling. It doesn't have to involve fine threads.
Weaving this pile of fabric strips into this traditional type of rag rug moves me in a way I can't explain.
So I guess I won't even try.
Menopausal women, ya gotta love em.

In a funk.

From Crazy as a Loom

You know those days when you can't get out of your own way??? You know the ones. Sometimes it's a day, and sometimes it runs into two, or three. You don't know what ails you, you're not sick. You're kind of tired, and you wander around from one thing to the next, and every time you start something, you think you should probably be somewhere else, doing something else.
Do you have those days?
You dread looking in the mirror, you know it will be scary. You're hungry, and you're not. You think you might be tired, so you take a nap, but when you wake up, you feel worse. You are easily annoyed, and quick to snap a response to any commentary.
I hear this little voice, "Buck up, little camper."
Grrrrrr.
I'll give you 'buck up'.

Then today, grumpy as ever, disjointed, and ever out of sorts, I took my mother to the grocery store, for her weekly shop fest.
I didn't want to go. It was hot today in northeastern New York, 80 and still. I didn't want to do anything. And in fact, I couldn't see much good about anything.
Whoa, bad mood or what???
So we went into Hannaford. She takes off on her little motorized sit down scooter.
Here in these parts, we have Hannaford and Price Chopper. No Winn-Dixie, Krogers, Albertsons, Puff Daddys.........I just threw that last one in.......sorry.
And then it happened.
Leaning on a cart at the end of the aisle, keeping my mother in view......she tends to get anxious if she thinks she is totally alone........I took note of some of my fellow shoppers.
One lady, all of my age, large chested, with a tank top and cleavage to spare.......sporting no bra.
And I thought I was a mess.
OK.
A young woman, also riding a cart, whose children were filling her shopping cart, due to her severe disabilities. Young, a mother, disabled. Coping.
Oh, my.
All through the store, in the produce aisle, in the cookie aisle, in the frozen foods, there were people in lots worse shape........no pun intended.......than I. They were shopping for dinner, they were reading their lists, trying to keep their kids in line.
Suddenly, I was grateful.
For my pain in the butt mother who insisted on buying the brand name baby aspirin for $2 more than the store brand, no matter what my argument was.
For a hot May day with no snow.
For money on my debit card to buy groceries with.
For a pain here and there that tells me I am still alive.
For the option of doing nothing, when I can't concentrate on anything.
Yeah.
It's the difference in perspectives........what's on the loom, what's under the loom?????

From Crazy as a Loom

It's good to look at things from different angles. Don't you think??

I made one of these rugs yesterday. I am torn between how cool I think they are, and what a pain they are to make.
From Crazy as a Loom

Not the usual.
The pieces......called heel strips.....are put in the shed individually, so it is time consuming.
On the last one, I trimmed the edges pretty short, but this time, I said, nah......I don't think I'm going to trim them at all. Got myself quite the little attitude, didn't I?
Anyway, I think I like them better this way. Au naturale.

From Crazy as a Loom

Sometimes, the process you go through isn't pretty, but I am OK with the results.
And isn't that what matters?
Welcome to my world.
