A little reality check.

Sometimes, when things are going fairly well, and the headache seems manageable, I slip slide into my old busy-ness.  It seems so right.

This morning, I was weaving on my new purple towel warp, in waffle weave. I was zipping right along, having found my groove.
I felt good, really good.  In fact, at one point, I thought about how "minimal" my headache was, and almost gave a "hallelujah".
It would have been premature.
For sure.

Unfortunately, this pattern work keeps my head down, watching what I am doing.  No mindless throwing of the shuttle, glancing down only occasionally.  Nope, I was intent.

And after a while, too long I fear, "me NECK" just suddenly went as stiff as cement, and the pain was immediate.
Within 5 minutes, my headache was full tilt, and nauseating.

I only tried to avoid the inevitable for about 10 minutes or so......and then I came home.
I know the drill.

Roy was waiting for me.  He immediately gets under my arm on the couch, and sits with his face leaning on mine.  And no matter how many times I tell him not to lick my face,  he still occasionally tries to.
Then he yawns that exaggerated yawn, that is both primordial and expressive.  I have yet to figure out what it is he is thinking.
Hot tea, heated Rice Pack on back of neck, Motrin, laying back with eyes closed, contemplating the situation.
Little voice says: "This is a revolting turn of events."
Which makes me smile.

What???  you don't have a little voice?

I don't believe you.  It's that one that Eckhart tells us not to listen to.
You know the one.

  2. Ouch! Yep- know the egoic voice well :) And it still talks me into listening more than I should. I hope you are able to alleviate the pain! My husband gets an instant migraine from laying on his back- or tilting it backwards- ugh!

  3. Roy is thinking, hot pack, hot tea, cuddle with me.

    Hope you feel much better.

    The towels are very pretty.

  4. I think Roy knows too much and he may be yawning because he is a little stressed. I think he worries about you. He must feel so good to cuddle up on the couch beside you and just 'be'. Take care of yourself today and I hope by now it has subsided some.
    Hugs, Deb

  6. Trial and error, you will figure out what you can and can't do. Can you wear some kind of neck brace while weaving?

  7. Oh Hilary, I do have that voice and it's speaking to me now..."you've been at the computer all morning working...now stop and stretch before you pay for it later!" I hate that voice because I have so much to do with a new book, new designs, etc. I'd love to send that voice on a long trip...at least until I can finish:-D

  8. oooh, I have that little voice. Finally started listening to it in my forties.

And I was going to suggest a corn bag, put I googled and your rice bags are the same thing. I use it ALOT.. really helps the damned headache and neck stiffness when I'm going to bed.. put it under my neck facing up like a neck roll and it helps ease the pain away.

Love that plant!.. what is it, I don't recognize it.

  9. Such a glorious color in that weave! BUT, your health must come first by all means so lay the shuttle down or whatever piece it is you have to pick up, and think about nothing for a while... I think that's what Roy is trying to tell you.

  11. God bless Roy! So glad you got home, and hopefully by now you are finding relief! Golly - your weaving is unreal. I still want to come and hang out in your studio. : -)

  12. I know all about getting caught up in what I'm doing and not listening to my body, when a few seconds of a break would have prevented the pain (or at least minimized it). The towels are looking great, but not worth the pain.

And I've got a voice that talks to me, but it could seldom be called little. It tends to be pretty demanding!

  13. Is that Dusty Miller? I love those plants. So soft looking. Love the color of these towels.
You take it easy on yourself. That is what Roy is thinking...just stay here on the couch with me Mom!

  14. Yes, we all have the little voice, and sometimes what it says is correct, and sometimes it's to be ignored.

Sorry your headache came back like that, and of course Roy tries to lick your face. It's the instinctual greeting wolves have for others in their pack, he's showing his love.

    The purple is beautiful indeed.

When you wrote that Roy was waiting for you when you came home, I assumed Roy was your husband......when you said that Roy started licking your face I was shocked !!!!!

I hope this makes you smile and I hope you are feeling better today !!
