It is hard to know what to post about, when there is so much tragedy, death, destruction, and misery just a few hours away.
I could cry watching the news.
As always, Sydney is oblivious.
Sydney says:
When you don't fit in your box, you have to do whatever works.
L and I are busy. I am trying to get 'up to speed', but it ain't happening overnight.
One of the things I have been contemplating, since my surgery, is the state of my "possessions".
While lounging on the couch, recovering all those weeks, I thought about all my STUFF.
I am not talking about stuff at the studio. That is stuff that gets used, or will get used, in a profitable way.
The stuff that bothers me, is the stuff at home.
Too many clothes, too many dishes, too many books, too much minutiae. TOO MUCH STUFF.
I have realized that I only need a few material things to make me happy.
Some books, some yarn, my laptop. I'm good.
So I have brought some boxes home, and I am starting to sift through it all.
I am enthusiastic about being minimalist. At least in my personal life.
The studio is just another animal.
I just want to simplify where I can.
I guess I want to live with less, of my own volition. We shouldn't need a hurricane to show
us how to prioritize.
I am so sad for all the people and animals who are suffering from this horrible event. It must feel 'too close' for your comfort. I can imagine. I've been doing the same for a year now and have only the clothes I wear and love, the books I have to keep to 'refer to' and my closets are done. It's dishes I have a problem with. I love them all. It feels good to purge unwanted items, though. It's rejuvenating. If only the retired guy would feel the same way. He's Mennonite and feels there is a need for everything, if not now, in the future. Geesh!
ReplyDeleteI am in a transition process now, living away from home (at school) and just going back for a few days now and then to check on the house. I spend more time taking stuff to the dump and to charity shops now.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to have a fresh look at things...for some reason my time away makes me want to have less to come home to.
Glad to hear you are getting back into the swing of it.
We both were watching the news at the same time. And I hear you about prioritizing. Sometimes it does take something like a disaster to kick it in, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt is sad about all those who were affected by that storm . A lot of my collectables and stuff are from my mums house when she passed or of what she had given me over the years so for me a lot of the stuff has sentimental value but I do know what you mean and where your coming from ! I am glad to hear you are getting better every day . Sydney you are a cutie there in your box ! Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree.... I need and want to get rid of 'stuff' but even just thinking about it gets me feeling overwhelmed. Will definitely get rid of things once we get the house sold and move on. Just don't want to take it all to a new house... time to simplify.

ReplyDeleteI've been doing the same... and somehow lately, buying more "stuff" just isn't appealing.
I won't even touch on the heartbreak that is the tristate area. so.. unreal.
This is a great thing to do. Sorting and getting rid of stuff simplifies your life, and makes everything easier.
ReplyDeleteWhen we moved from Colorado to Washington State four years ago, we left so much behind and have been reluctant to get more stuff. It is amazing how little one really needs to be happy and content. And passing it along to others who need it feels good, too. :-)
ReplyDeletecould you come here and help me weed out all the excess i don't need? i tried this weekend when i gave the apartment a thorough cleaning .. long overdue .. but when it came to dusting i was overwhelmed with the amount of stuff needing to be moved in order to dust ... so i was going to throw things away ... i couldn't .. i so need an intervention ...
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you sister!
ReplyDeleteMartha
I've been downsizing to a much smaller house all summer, and am still clearing out stuff from the "big house" It's amazing how ruthless you can get when contemplating an "heirloom" with diminishing sentimental value....the local church is getting a ton of great stuff!
ReplyDeleteDownsizing. It's on my mind, too. I've given a lot to Salvation Army, but it hasn't seemed to make a dent. I really have to get ruthless.
ReplyDeleteSydney, your box is looking very festive these days.

I have moved in with my Dad. At 90, he needs a little help. I am between two houses. I brought all I needed to live with, and I am managing. (Of course, all my hobby stuff and books are at the other house.) I am going to have to minimize here, then minimize there and move the rest of my belongings in. It's been a trial to decide what I really need and what I just "want".
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are beginning to feel better every day. The human tragedy in NY and NJ just breaks my heart...it does make one realize what is important doesn't it? I also have been trying to simplify for a while and still have a ways to go. I, like others who have commented, find that I need little to be content. Continue to heal! And that kitty spilling out of the box is just too cute and funny.

ReplyDeleteMoving parents then starting to move us has made the downsize process a daily thought. Many things were easy to repurpose, others not so much. The hardest were the boxes of memories-photos, videos, stuff from my children when they were younger. The hardest decisions were deciding what to keep from my youngest son, the artist, photographer because he left us.
ReplyDeleteMy oldest son and other family members are in NYC. It is tough, but they are carrying on the best they can.
I guess when life throws you that curve ball, it still also lets you count your blessings.
