Well, at least I know you aren't all asleep out there.
Didn't mean to get everyone fired up, although maybe getting fired up now and then is a good thing.
It's easy to get complacent.
Today was my mother's first cataract surgery, and she did great. But she read the instructions to me, twice, about having someone stay with her for 24 hours. I am sure she would have been fine, but I stayed home anyway. While she dozed in front of her stove, I started my DECLUTTER plan.
I began in the living room, every shelf, every drawer, every place that was stashed with stuff.
Books, papers, magazines, minutiae. I organized. I bagged up a whole bunch of it that was leaving my house.
Then when my husband came home, I took Roy for a long walk. It was warm, so warm that I had my coat unzipped, and took my gloves off.
These guys were enjoying the sun.
Back in November, I remember thinking that there were about 120 days to navigate Roy's walks through winter weather. But we got through December, headache and all. The weather was so mild, that some days, I went for a walk just to thumb my nose at the headache.
I'm like that.
And now here we are, almost half way through January, and we're still walking. It's amazing.
Tomorrow, she has her post op recheck, and then maybe I will get some weaving done. And then, in two weeks, we can do it all over again for the other eye. My declutter plan for that day targets the kitchen, and all the cupboards........oh, joy.
I came home and made strawberry shortcake from those strawberries I froze last summer. Oh, my, they were so good.
I'm thinking it is almost time for a giveaway. Something fun.
Any ideas?
But before you go, tell me something. I got to thinking about this as I was going through a pile of recipes that I had torn from magazines eons ago........and found a couple that I just knew would be perfect winter fare.
What comfort food are you crazy for in the middle of January???
Popcorn. I think that would be my comfort food for anytime.
ReplyDeleteChili (con carne). The strawberry shortcake looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteI love vegetarian lasagna and garlic bread. There are tons of ways to change it up and try different veggies. Tonight I made one with spinach, zucchini, mushroom & peppers. Mmm Mmm
ReplyDeleteSoups are great comfort food for winter, too. I'll bet you have some amazing recipes. Hugs, Deb

We got snow yesterday down here in VA. It wasn't much, stuck over night, was gone today in the 53 degree temps!
I LOVE good ole homemade macaroni and cheese! Crispy crust and ketchup. Add some smokey swiss in, it's just the right flavor. Mmmmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteWarm home made bread...lots of it.
ReplyDeleteIn a normal winter, I'd be making some Baked Oatmeal, with or without apples, it doesn't matter! This year, it's too warm yet! I also like hot chocolate made with MILK and Hershey's cocoa and real whipped cream (Cabot is the best).
ReplyDeleteMy friend recently recieved a rug order from you and she LOVES them!!!!!!!!!!!! We didn't even know we each read your blog until Dec. Small world.
ANYTHING you give away, I want! :)
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, winter comfort food is steamed root veggies, Brussels, etc., over brown rice with a tamari/tahini herbed sauce.
One of my sons friends posted on facebook that he was making banana bread. I got that thought in my head and couldn't get it out, so...I made a scrumptious coconut banana bread.
ReplyDeleteBanana bread is Only a winter food in my house, not sure why.
We love hearty soups in the wintertime - even when it's 60 out! Rocky Mountain weather is always a toss up, but this year it has been really warm. This weekend we tried Pioneer Woman's Tuscan Bean Soup - yummy! DH also made some Thai Coconut soup that I thought was delicious and he thought was mediocre - of course he forgot to put the lime juice in his so ...
ReplyDeleteThat strawberry shortcake looks so sweet and summery! ~chris
Right now I have a big ol' slow cooker full of split pea soup. That and a loaf of french bread... YUM!
ReplyDeleteI think your give away should be some of that Strawberry Shortcake. LOL!
We just had strawberries tonight too! Over ice cream! They had some on sale at the store for $1.99 and they were very sweet and good flavor. It was a nice treat before we are facing three days of snows on the forecast!

Hi Hilary! I've been reading your blog for a couple of months now, mostly on my phone, so I haven't chimed in with any comments, but my resolution for the new year is to contribute and interact with the wonderful blogs I read, so here goes...
ReplyDeleteMy winter comfort food? Banana pancakes (with chocolate chips if so desired) - they're excellent hot off the griddle, but almost better when cold and used to make PB&J sandwiches.
Can't think of a thing I'm craving. Well, yes I can but it's not food. I just miss having a partner, you know what I mean? And I believe you do.
ReplyDeleteGlad you stayed with your Mom. Even though things were very likely to be fine, I'm sure she felt much more secure with you around just in case.
ReplyDeleteI have been craving those enchiladas from Whole Foods you shared with me last summer!
